  • President-Elect McCaw
    A visit of ISA president 2004 Lowel McCaw to the district occured recently. The sections he visited were the England, Ireland, Leinster Ireland, and leaders from the France, Belgium and Netherlands Sections. There may be some reports on this visit on the individual section websites.

    Awards announced.
    The ISA awards for 2003 have been announced. They were presented at the Autumn Meeting of the Society in Houston (US). There are a number which are given within our district. Full Details

    Golden Achievement Award

      Robert Shine (Ireland Section)
      Alex Bobovitch (St Petersberg Section)
      In recognition of exemplary efforts and achievements across many countries, cultures, and languages to further ISA student activities and to mentor students.
    Distinguished Society Service Award:
      Maurizio Brancaleoni (Italy Section)
    And for the second year in a row in the Section Performance Award:
      Ireland Section
      For garnering the most points among medium (201-400 members) Gold Sections
    Congratulations to all concerned!


    Shirt back D12 Student team returned from Houston with gold, silver and bronze medals! This year SUAI students represented Europe in the 11 ISA international student Games in Houston. they got excellent results at the ISG All stars Bowl : Boris Scorina got gold, Maxim Ovodenko got- silver and Maxim Samoylov- got bronze medals! The team adviser during many years from 1996- Alex Bobovitch was awarded the Don W.Tompson Award.

    Passing the Torch
    On New Year's Day the torch passed from Declan Lordan (left) as District 12 VP into the capable hands of Jean Vieille from the France Section. This picture from the archive shows them both at the Workshop and Conference in Nice, France in 2001.
    International Forum
    In early September 2003 the International Forum "Integration of the Education and Science in 21st century" was held in St. Petersburg, Russia. The ISA Russian section was a co-sponsor of this Forum. During the Forum ISA vice-president DPD Dr. Cockrell and ISA Russian Federation chair Dr. Anatoli Ovodenko led the ISA round table. At this round table 17 ISA Russian section members and 6 ISA SUAI students section members took part.
    An agreement between SUAI and ISU for 2004 was signed. The Forum had more then 200 participant from Europe, America, Asia and Russia.

    Conference celebrates 300years St Petersburg The Forth InternationalSchool-Conference, part of the commemoration of the 300th annivirsary of Saint-Petersburg were held 23-27 June of 2003. The ISA Russian regular section and ISA headquarters Russian Federation are co-sponsors of thei event. They prepared 50 prizes and certificates for the best students reports. Awards were presented to students by ISA headquarters Russian Federation chair professor Anatoli Ovodenko and section president professor Alexander Samoylov.

    D12 Leadership Conference

    The District 12 Leadership Conference 2003 was held at the end of March 2003 in The Grand Hotel, Cervia so as to overlap with the OMC (Offshore Oil & Gas) Exhibition (26-28 March 2003) in being held closeby in Ravenna.

    Long Distance Learning

    Dr. G. Cockrell ( ISA vice-president) presents by long distance lecture on " Project management" to SUAI students in St Petersburg.

    New VP Elect announced Billy Walsh from the Ireland Section is the new Vice President Elect for District 12. He has been President of the Ireland Section and has held many offices in that section.
    In the District he has acted as Treasurer and more recently as District Secretary.
    He is part of the team at the National University of Ireland's prestigious Dairy and Food Engineering Department in Cork.

    ISA Ireland's Industry Dinner
    The ISA Industry Dinner, which was be held in Cork in October. This social event was organised to celebrate the Section winning the Gold in the World Section Performance Award, for the second year in a row. The sectioned also recognised Bob Shine the first member in Ireland to be awarded the Society's Golden Achievement Award for 25 years dedicated service

    Diplomatic visit

    Russian member honoured
    RAS academics professor Lidia Chubraeva (St. Petersburg Russian section member) received recognition in a greeting letter from Russian president Vladimir Putin to mark March 8, 2003 ( Women's Day). Picture shows Lidia Chubraeva presenting her lecture for the First ISA Italian - Russian students seminar last summer with (inset) the official presidential notification document.

    FORUM ADVANTIC
    The Advantic Forum held recently has been a great success. 300 participants took part. The Key of success was at first the reputation of the IRA Institute throughout France and Nortf Africa, a strong program on advanced topics in automation with international industrial and academic experts in advanced control with strong tutorial & technical sessions. Strong cooperation with ISA France section from the planning stage ensured this high quality of content.
    The organisers were especially fortunate to have the presence of President Pino Zani and help for various other sections including Ian Verhappen from Canada and Paulo Pinceti from Genoa.

    A proposal has been made to hold a District 12 Symposium for the year 2003/4, possible in the Marseille Region on Advanced instrumentation & Automation in the Environmenta Field (technical , economical & safety aspects). This would be held in the English language with simultaeneous translations into French.

    International Conference
    Striving for Perfection in a Regulated Environment - An End User View

    The Ireland Section's International Conference held in February was well attended with over one hundred delegates. Picture shows fromer Section President Tony Mahon (DPS Engineering), Greg Brandyberry GSK, Alan Edwards, Section President (CG Svcs)and Cormac Callaghan BMS, who chaired the event.
