The District 12 Leadership Conference took place in Leiden, The Netherlands on 8th and 9th May. The event was attended by delegates from host section The Netherlands and from the England, France, Ireland, Saint Petersburg and Spain sections. Also in attendance were ISA Society President Gerald Cockrell, ISA Senior Administrator Laura Crumpler and a representative from the pre-formative Belgium section.

Delegates heard updates from President Cockrell on Society news and status and discussed a lot of interesting topics of interest to section leaders.

Leiden on WIKIPEDIA

Leiden is ideally situated for anybody travelling from our district or further afield. Leiden Central train station is a five minute taxi ride or a ten minute bus trip away. Leiden Central can be reached by train from The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany or Britain.

Amsterdam's Schiphol airport is only 20 minutes from Leiden Central, with direct trains every 15 to 20 minutes. Schiphol can be reached from anywhere in the world, by regular airlines and by several of the discount airlines as well.

For people who want to drive, Hotel Leiden is only minutes away from the A44 motorway.

One initiative taken by District Vice-President Kevin Dignam was to establish a LinkedIn group for leaders from the sections and the district in order to foster more inter-section co-operation and communications. Any District 12 ISA leader who wishes to join the group should request this through the District 12 ISA Leaders Discussion Group on Linkedin. Kevin said of this move: "District 12 covers a dispersed and large area with resulting difficulties associated with meeting attendances and travel. This LinkedIn group will enable the district sections to continue to develop ideas proposed during the DLC without the expense of meeting in person. The move will leverage technology in order to obtain continuous input and involvement from all of the section leaders." (Click on Linkedin logo to get started!)

The District Council Meeting took place on Saturday 9th.

Both events were attended by 18 delegates including eight leaders who were attending their first DLC and District Council Meeting.

Minutes and presentation details will be distributed shortly and we are putting up pictures HERE as they are sent to us!

Leiden is probably best known as the birthplace of Rembrandt, the place where the first Dutch tulips were grown (at the Hortus Botanicus), and for its university which is the oldest in the country.

Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden in 1606 and worked there until 1631 - his Leiden period. WIKI on Rembrandt
